Meet Rev. Dr. Michael Droege
Michael Droege, PhD, is the founder of The Willow Haven Project and a seasoned ministry leader with over 30 years of experience.
He holds a doctorate in Practical Theology and has served as a congregational pastor, youth ministry leader, university lecturer, and consultant for churches across traditions and cultures. His work integrates theology, sociology, psychology, and educational theory, always grounded in a deep pastoral heart.
Michael’s calling is to help leaders see the big picture while guiding them through the practical steps needed to create healthy, vibrant, and sustainable ministry. Whether mentoring a young pastor, guiding a church through renewal, or developing intergenerational discipleship resources, his goal is always the same: to help God’s people flourish.
“ I know what it’s like to lead in times of uncertainty—to love your people deeply and still wonder if you’re doing enough. I created The Willow Haven Project because leaders and congregations deserve a safe place to reflect, reimagine, and grow. I’m here to help you find the clarity, courage, and resilience you need for the road ahead. ”

Why the Willow Haven Project Exists
After a lifetime of ministry practice and research, Dr. Droege became increasingly aware of many gaps that were stopping churches from realizing their full mission - particularly for progressive churches. There is good research and resources available for churches, but few pastors or congregations have the time or access to mine, discern, and apply valuable practices and insights to their context. We believe that it is understanding context that makes all the difference.
The Willow Haven project was born from the desire to really listen to what churches need and then be a partner as they discover their call and embrace their unique mission. The result is thriving congregations who are making a difference and growing generations
Our Name
The Willow is a tree known for its deep roots and remarkable flexibility. In storms, it bends without breaking. Its canopy offers shelter for new life, and its roots even help nourish the soil around it.
The Haven part is drawn from the world of family psychology, which describes the 'safe haven' and secure base we all need—whether we are children learning to explore the world or leaders seeking to navigate change. A haven is not a place of escape, but a place of renewal and strength.
Our Vision
We bring these two ideas together to form our vision :
To be a place where faith leaders and communities can find both rootedness and flexibility—grounded in timeless truths, yet ready to adapt faithfully to new realities.

Our Approach
-
Discern the mission and good work already happening through asking powerful questions
-
Identify strengths and gifts present within the congregation
-
Encourage and guide listening practices both internally and externally
-
Develop innovations that are data-driven and adaptive
-
Practice the flexibility and resilience that nurtures sustainable growth
